Minister: Morocco Will Be World’s Most Competitive Platform for Electric Car Manufacturing

Rabat – Moroccan Minister of Industry Riyad Mezzour has high hopes to see Morocco as the world’s most competitive platform for electric car manufacturing.

Mezzour shared his ambitious vision for Morocco’s electric car sector during the opening of the 7th Automotive Handling Exhibition in Tangier.

“We will be the most competitive and integrated electric platform in the world, serving not only our future giant factories but also the giant factories throughout the region,” Mezzour said during his opening speech.

The minister also pledged Morocco’s commitment to advancing the ongoing transformation of the electric car industry, “which will transition to 100%”  by 2030 with an integrated industrial system.

He vowed that Morocco would be “one of the rare countries in the world with a completely integrated industrial system for the production of car batteries.”

Morocco aims to establish itself as a country that provides services with the “necessary quality and cost” to a country that offers competitive solutions, Mezzour said, noting that this is the real challenge of the new industrial era.

Emphasizing the strength of Morocco’s automotive sector, Mezzour emphasized that the North African country is set to achieve a record in exports through sales worth around MAD 140 billion this year compared to MAD 111 billion in 2022.

The plan to reach MAD 360 billion in transaction volume by 2029 aligns easily with the announced projects, Mezzour said, adding that Morocco’s car industry is “undergoing a second revolution.

“We need a new type of product, linked to heavy industries, chemistry, and sovereignty, and we are invited to achieve this to transition from mere order receivers to an economic and industrial system that provides solutions,” Mezzour said.

Several reports highlighted Morocco’s potential to become a regional and international leader in electric car manufacturing.

In August, the UNCTAD report on Economic Development described Morocco’s automotive industry as “exemplary.

Last year,  Mezzour emphasized that the national car industry is on track to double its production input of electric cars over the coming two years, with a production target of 100,000 units annually.
