Peter Szijjártó said he was open to criticism for his actions, but allegedly wanted to “deliver a call to peace.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto arrived in the capital of Belarus’ co-aggressor country in Minsk on Monday, February 13. The Hungarian official himself spoke about this on his Facebook page.
“Hungary expects all members of the international community to act to ensure immediate peace and avoid steps that could lead to the continuation or escalation of the war,” he said.
According to him, Budapest plans to represent this “peaceful position” at today’s talks in Minsk.
Szijjarto also assured that he is ready to criticize his visit to Belarus, but he believes that “channels of communication should be open.”
“Obviously, many will criticize the visit, but our position is clear: the channels of communication must be open. If we had not done this, I would not be able to convey the call for peace to you today,” the minister assures.
At the same time, he did not explain why he came to Minsk, because even though the Republic of Belarus is not de jure occupied , political statements about Belarus’ dependence on the Russian Federation were made at the levels of the authorities of a number of countries. In particular, we are talking about the National Security and Defense Council and the Office of the President of Ukraine. In addition, the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said that he considers Belarus as partly occupied. Statements similar in meaning have been made at the level of the President of the United States.
As previously reported, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently made a number of scandalous statements about Ukraine. In particular, he compared it to Afghanistan and called it “no man’s land” .
